iPod Blues Part Duex
-
So I went to MacStation and they let me plug my iPod in, so it’s working again. Sort of.
The fucker outrightly refuses to work with mini firewire. I have a 6pin to 4 pin converter, and I’ve now tried it on 2 ipod cables and neither of which enable me to use the iPod with my dell inspiron 8000 which only has usb1 and a 4 pin firewire port.
Now I know this firewire port works because I’ve just been copying video to it from my DV camera.
So all I can think is that either every cable I’ve tried to use has been faulty in some way, or that the iPod is fucked, or that apple are crafty bastards and have wired it up so that only the special apple 6 pin to 4pin adapter, (that sells for $35 as opposed to the $7 I paid for mine), will enable the device to work.
I’m suspecting it’s the latter, In which case I might admit defeat and go to the apple store again and see if they can help me.
Otherwise I’ll fuck firewire off entirely and get a USB2 PCMCIA card for my laptop and use it with that. Which I could have done in Japan but I wanted to get a USB2 Firewire combo card, which didn’t seem to exist anywhere in Akihabara.
They also don’t seem to be easy to find in Vancouver. I know they exist, and I’ve seen them for silly prices on the internet through canadian resellers, but I’m hoping a quick trip to chinatown will solve my problems.
We’ll see tomorrow.

iPod Blues

I just broke my iPod.
Well, not exactly broke it, but reformatted it, and now it wants me to plug it into the wall for some odd reason. It even has a little picture of the wall charger that comes up every time I turn it on.
Only problem is, I don’t have a wall charger with me. It’s sitting somewhere on my floor back in Australia, whilst I am sitting in front of a PC in Canada.
Apparently my brother’s friend has a charger, so all is not lost, but I think it’s pretty dumb to have to plug it into the wall after a firmware reset.
The other thing I hate is iTunes. What the hell is up with not being able to copy your music off your iPod onto another computer?
I tried to sync files, hit yes to something I should have hit no to and ended up losing all but 270 songs. Not much fun when you’ve got three 10 hour flights in 2 weeks. I want my music back!
I suppose I could try and use some data recovery software on it and see what I can get back. But then I can’t use it until I find a wall charger. ARRRGH!
